Objective
According to the NCTM Principles and Standards for
School Mathematics, students in grades 3-5 should be able to predict and
describe the results of sliding, flipping, and turning two-dimensional shapes.
In this activity students practice these skills and determine the order in which
eight squares are transformed and layered from top to bottom by analyzing an
overlapping view of the top square.
Problem
Eight squares cover the large square below. All of the eight
squares are the same size. The square marked 1 is completely shown. However,
you can only see a part of the other seven squares. Number the squares in order
from the top layer to the bottom layer.
