Shapes Around Your School

Objective

According to NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, students in grades 3-5 should be able to recognize geometric ideas and relationships and apply them to other disciplines and to problems that arise in the classroom or in everyday life. In this activity, students practice these skills as they take a walking tour of their school to discover polygons in their world.

Task

Students look for objects that contain geometric shapes, then fill in the appropriate information on the form below.
Procedure:
    1. Take a walk around the school and look for objects that contain geometric shapes.
    2. Draw an appropriate object discovered on the "Shapes Walk" in box #1.
    3. Isolate the geometric shape in box #1 and draw the geometric shape in box #2.
    4. Describe the shape in box #3.
