Directions for a News Articles

Writing a feature news article builds on the skills that the students developed in Angie's Media Evaluator programs. This activity will also help develop literal comprehension skills and the appreciation of changing points of view.

  1. Individual students or collaborative groups write feature articles, including headlines, about one main event in the books they have chosen.
  2. Write the articles as they would appear on the front pages of the newspapers in the cities where the events took place.
  3. Assume the role of news reporters and clearly describe the events in detail so that readers can understand exactly what happened and why.
  4. Include quotes from the eyewitnesses to the events.
  5. Since all good headline articles include photographs, create color pictures that capture the essence of the events to accompany the articles. These can be drawings or original photographs of scenes recreated and posed by the students.
