Calling All Commercial Makers!

Hints for Making Great Commercials

 

  1. Brainstorm your favorite commercials. Think about and discuss with your partners, what makes them appealing to you.

  2. Watch commercials. What are some of the ways they capture your attention?

  3. Read about common advertising strategies. Can you identify these strategies in commercials.

  4. Decide what product or idea you want to create a commercial about.

  5. Decide who your target audience will be. Find out what your target audience is like.
    What do they like to do? Where do they like to go? Etc.

  6. Choose an advertising strategy that will get your idea across or persuade your target audience to buy your product.

  7. Write a script for your commercial. Notice that the script is divided into two parts.
    Video: What we will see in your commercial. Audio: What we will hear in your commercial.

  8. Use a storyboard to create a visual impression of your script.
    -Include camera transitions between the scenes of the storyboard so that the camera person moves from one shot to another.

  9. Prepare to video.

    Equipment needed:
    -VCR(video cassette recorder)
    -Television

  10. Decide who will do what?
    -Who will be the cameraperson? The camera person is responsible for taping the commercial.
    -Who will be the talent? The talent acts out the commercial.
    -Who will be the set designers? The set designers set up the stage with props and other materials or equipment.
    -Who will direct the commercial? The director directs the starting, making, and completion of the commercial.

    Editing

  11. -In Camera editing:
    Tape the scenes in the order in which they will appear in the final video.
    You tape the first scene, then pause or stop the camera and prepare the second scene and so on.

    -Edit using two VCRS
    Show students how to edit using two vcrs. This is not the best editing process, but it can produce a passable edit.

    -Video Production labs
    Video production labs will rent their video editing equipment, but you must use it in their facility.

    -Local highschool, college, or University
    Sometimes the department of teleproduction or media may be willing to let you use their equipment. Find out your options.

  12. Evaluating your commercial.
    After completing the commercial, review it. Check to see that you have met all the requirements.
    -Is the commercial 30seconds to 1 minute long?
    -Does it have good visual and sound quality?
    -Is it creative?
    -What prize do you think your commercial will win? Why?
