Description:
Different types of fruits, vegetables, and plants produce unique
seeds. For this inquiry, students will collect and catalog the different
types of seeds and their source. Students will be able to make comparisons
between the seeds and what they grow into.
| |
Materials:
For this lesson you will need an assortment of seeded fruits, vegetables,
and plants; A sharp object for opening fruits and vegetables; Construction
paper sheets to use as display boards; coloring and writing tools;
glue or tape.
| |
Activity:
1.
Watch the video clip about different seeds bearing
fruits, vegetables, and plants. |
| |
2.
Discuss the different types of fruits, vegetables,
and plants that are available in your classroom. Review the
names and general features. |
| |
3.
Slice open all the fruits, vegetables, and plants
for the students. Observe the number, shape, size, and color
of the seeds provided by each. |
| |
4.
Allow students to select one to four different
slices containing seeds. They then take the seeds and glue or
tape them to their construction paper. They should label the
type of seed and even draw a picture of what it came from. |
| |
5.
Have students make observations about the size,
shape, and colors of the seeds and compare those observations
to the item the seed comes from. What conclusions can they draw
from these observations? (For example, a student may observe
that the bigger the fruit, the bigger the seed. Can others prove
or disprove this conclusion?) |
| |
6.
Posting these projects, written questions, and
written conclusions would make a great classroom bulletin board. |
| |
Evaluation:
1.
Participation in student project and discussion
serve as opportunities for teacher evaluation of student learning. |
| |
2.
To extend this activity, plant some of the seeds
and see if they grow. Students can observe the life cycle of
different types of plants. Do a little checking into what grows
in your particular setting. Some plants have special needs. |
