Letter from Tovah
The Task
Students write letters to Rifka, written as Tovah. They draw on their
personal response and speculate about Tovah's feelings.
Procedures
- After reading Rifka's last letter to Tovah, students write again
as Tovah.
- This time Tovah has actually received the Puskin book from Rifka
with all the letters written in the blank pages and margins, plus
the letters Rifka wrote on separate pieces of paper.
- What does Tovah have to say to her cousin Rifka about her year
long journey to America?
- What made her cry for Rifka, feel happy for Rifka, and hope for
Rifka?
- For younger, less prepared students for whom letter writing is a
chore, this letter frame may be helpful.
