Coming to America

When My Mom Moved to Okinawa Japan

My mother, Patricia, has moved a lot since she married my dad who is a marine. Today, I would like to tell you about her move from San Diego, California to Okinawa, Japan.

My mother encountered many hardships including the loss of many friends. Mother faced each hardship and overcame them. She is a person who possesses self-reliance and demonstrated it when she learned how to drive on the opposite side of what we do here in America. She was always turning on her windshield wipers instead of the signal light. Mother showed self-discipline when she limited her phone calls to one a month, phone calls were very expensive.

Perseverance was apparent when it took her a long time to find a job, but she stuck to it. Above all, mother demonstrated self preservation by going to church and meeting new people. She also got over her fear of talking to the Japanese people and learning a few words in Japanese. She also made several Japanese friends. Sushi is one of her favorite foods.

In our lives, we can learn not to give up on what ever we are faced with. We can also make new friends and get use to a new environment from Mother's experience. In my own life, I see a similarity because in August of 1999, I will be moving away from Charlotte to a new and much different place. My mother will help me because of the experience that she has.
