To whom it may concern:

I am a sixth grader at Ynez Middle School and in science we are studying the environment and how we can protect it. Students brought in plastic packaging and containers to find out how many types of plastics there are and to study them. I am writing to you because of a product you market called "Lunchables".

Many companies that process food are now beginning to turn to recycled materials for their packaging needs - with the amount of trash people throw away each day increasing and the landfill space decreases Recycling is something the whole United States and the world must start to do NOW. The annual amount of trash America's population throws out is about 200,000,000 TONS and Rising! Two Hundred Million TONS! America is the country with the highest amount of trash thrown out among every other country on this planet - we should be ashamed of ourselves. America is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world - but we can't even manage our own environment!

There is not just one kind of plastic that has been created but nine different types. Six out of nine of these plastics can be recycled. The other two cannot be. As you may know plastics are coded with a symbol dipicting the type of plastic used in processing the plastic. Number 7, Number 8, and Number 9 are the plastics that cannot be recycled, they are composed like the other types of plastic. These plastics are formed from a mixture of all types of plastics. The plastic is strong but the only problem is that it cannot be recycled. What happens to the plastic? It sure can't be recycled. It will probably end up in a landfill and take up space. Another thing that could happen is it could end up in the ocean or a river and get caught in an animals throat and kill it.

Now about your product, "Lunchables." Lunchables is a popular lunch time snack at my school. It is a fast and efficient snack for the kids and their parents also. I also enjoy the product. The problem with the "Lunchables" is that the plastic packaging is NOT RECYCLABLE! The plastic code on the packaging shows that it is plastic number seven. Your packaging will just end up in a landfill taking up space, or killing innocent creatures like raccoons who have nothing to do with the problem. That makes me very angry.

What happens when Termites start to feed on your home? They destroy it. That is exactly what "Lunchables" are doing to the environment - destroying it. Oscar Mayer Inc. is making a great sum of money from the Lunchables, and at the same time destroying our environment. All I ask is that you change the type of plastic you use to package your "Lunchables" and any other product you sell and I will be satisfied. Changing it from Plastic type number 7 to plastic type 4, 3, 2, or 1. Plastic type number one should suit the product well. It is recyclable and has the strength of about 1/6 the strength of metal. The meats and crackers are not heavy at all. The plastic should be able to support them very well.

Changing your packaging can also increase sales. Customers may buy your products if they see that your company is environmentally friendly. I sure will buy your products and I will advise friends and relatives about how your company is changing with the needs of our environment.

If you can do this task that I ask of you, I will be a very satisfied and gratified customer. If you do not, I am afraid I will have to ask my friends and family to boycott your products entirely and you will lose many great customers. I hope you understand your role in protecting our Planet Earth and our environment.

Sincerely yours,

Earl K.
