Enclosed are some materials that will help your planning
and preparation for the Los Angeles Regional Science Olympiad, which will
be held Saturday, February 26, 2000 at California State University, Northridge.
Pertinent information, in no particular order...
Science Olympiad Website
The Los Angeles County Regional Olympiad Website is up and running and
is a good source of the latest information as it unfolds. /scienceolympiad
California State University,
Northridge
The details are coming together at CSUN! We have figured out the room
assignments and find that the arrangement of the events is excellent.
A new site means new resources and new challenges - your flexibility will
be greatly appreciated. You'll have a little bit of a trek out to the
bottle rocket event - similar to what we have at the state competitionÑbut
it will be worth it. The only loose end to tie up is the awards presentation
location. We'll post details on the website as soon as they are finalized.
Thanks again to Stan Metzenberg for his efforts and support.
Registration
Plan to arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. to register your team. The registration
tables will be open at 7:30 a.m. and events begin at 8:30 a.m. this year.
Coaches are required to turn in a list of team members (names with grade
level) at the time of registration. Check the schedule
for information about impound times and arrange to impound devices at
the appropriate times.
Walk-In Events
Walk-in events require signing-up
for a participation time. Students should report to the event captain
as soon as the event is scheduled to begin and sign-up for a time to participate.
Reserve your times early! Do not wait until the last hours that the
event is scheduled and still expect to compete.
Parking
Parking will be in lot C on the CSUN campus. This lot is north and east
of the science buildings where most of the events will be held. Refer
to the maps.
Schedule
An updated schedule is now onlineÑtwo
events were left off of the Preliminary Schedule, Pentathlon and Nature
Quest. The room numbers have also been added to the schedule. There may
be changes to the schedule if there are room changes or if teams do not
show. Please read the schedule carefully to insure that all events and
times are understood.
Team Numbers
REMEMBER YOUR TEAM NUMBER AND MAKE SURE
YOUR STUDENTS KNOW THEIR TEAM NUMBER AS WELL. There are a couple of teams
with missing informationÑwe have saved you a spot, but if you do not appear
on the list of teams, please contact the Los Angeles Regional Science
Olympiad as soon as you can.
Walkie Talkies
Walkie talkies and related communication devices will not be permitted
at the event. Teams that use walkie talkies to gain advantage by passing
along questions or in any manner that violates the spirit of the competition
will be subject to disqualification. DonÕt bring your walkie talkies -
this will help avoid even the appearance that teams may be sharing information.
Team Make-Up
Division C teams are allowed to use a maximum of 7 12th-grade students
on a team. At registration you will be asked to identify your seniors
on the team roster. Teams not complying with the rule are subject to disqualification.
Division B teams are allowed to use a maximum of 5 9th-grade students.
At registration you will be asked to identify your 9th-graders on the
team roster. Teams not complying with the rule are subject to disqualification.
Food!
Service clubs from Downey High School will be selling snacks, sodas and
lunches at the Olympiad. You may also bring your own lunches if you desire.
Notice that events are scheduled throughout the lunch hour. Be sure your
team members plan accordingly.
Volunteers
All teams must bring one adult volunteer for every five students on the
science olympiad team. If you bring 6 to 10 students you need 2 adult
volunteers; 11-15 students meanss 3 volunteers. We can always use extra
volunteers if they are available from your school. Remember that these
volunteers are not simply chaperones for your teams but will assist the
event captains during the day. Register your volunteers and receive their
assignments when you register in the morning.
Good ÒTenantsÓ
We are guests on the California State University,
Northridge campus; we expect everyone to assist in cleanup. Place your
refuse in the proper containers. If you see litter, pick it up and dispose
of it properly. Please mention this to your students.
The Wright Stuff
This event will be held in a gymnasium containing two basketball courts
side-by-side, with a ceiling height of a standard height for this type
of facility. Plan your airplanes to be competitive in an arena this size.
Healthy, friendly competition is the Science Olympiad
tradition. Let's remember that the Olympiad is for fun and for students.
We expect roughly 1,000 people at the Olympiad; the excitement is building
É see you in February 2000!
