Staff
Development:
Teaching Number Concepts (K-8)
One
60-minute staff development program
This staff development program helps teachers identify important properties
of number that help build a firm foundation for understanding geometry
and algebra. Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities
for students, teachers, and parents are explored. Strategies and resources
are presented to help students learn how to use technology as a tool
for processing information, visualizing and solving problems, exploring
and testing conjectures, accessing data, and verifying solutions.
Student Programs:
Turn
On to Number (Grades 5-6)
Six 30 minute student programs
This module introduces students in grades 5 and 6 to the properties of
number with an emphasis on fractions and decimals. Students use concrete
models to build their understanding of concepts. They solve problems
encountered in their world that involve multiplication and division
of fractions. Topics include: Multiples, Primes, and Composites, Composing & Decomposing
Fractions, Understanding Fractional Relationships, Operations on Fractions
(multiplication & division), comparing Fractions and Decimals and
Everyday Fractions.
Staff Development:
Teaching Algebraic Concepts (K-8)
Two 60-minute staff development programs
The two staff development programs help teachers understand what algebraic
thinking is and the importance of teaching algebraic concepts throughout
the grades. Emphasis is placed on how these concepts relate to learning
basic skills. Strategies for helping students develop algebraic thinking
are modeled. Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities
for students, teachers, and parents are explored. Teachers discover
that they can teach algebra to their students.
Student
Programs:
Turn On to Algebra (Grades 5-6)
Eight 30-minute student
programs
Turn On to Algebra helps students understand that algebra is a problem
solving tool. Students investigate patterns and identify relationships
between numbers. They interpret and process word problems and develop
the understanding that formulas are equations and represent relationships
Topics include: Problem Solving and Patterns, Finding Functions, Graphing
Functions, Making Sense of Word Problems, Symbols of Algebra, Whats
an Integer? Working with Equations, Thinking Algebraically.
Staff Development:
Teaching Geometry Concepts (Grades 5-6)
Two 60-minute staff
development programs
These staff development programs help teachers understand geometry and
the instructional strategies for effectively teaching geometry concepts.
Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities for students,
teachers, and parents are explored. Strategies and resources are presented
to help students learn how to use technology as a tool for processing
information, visualizing and solving problems, exploring and testing
conjectures, accessing data, and verifying solutions.
Turn
On to Geometry (Grades 5-6)
Eight 30-minute student
programs
This module helps students develop spatial understanding. Through active
investigation, students discover properties and relationships of two-
and three-dimensional figures as well as an appreciation of their own
geometric world. Students work cooperatively to develop an understanding
of such geometric concepts as similarity, congruency, and how to apply
transformations. The content includes: Sorting & Classifying, Discovery
Why Polygons Tessellate, Exploring Angles Using Tangrams, Exploring
Polygons, Using Tangrams, Creating Polyhedrons Using Polydrons, Drawing
3-D Objects in Perspective, Demonstrating Geometric Ideas and Platonic
Solids and Crystals.
