HISTORY

Student as an Historian
One 60-minute staff development program
Five 60-minute student programs for grades 4-6

In the professional development program, teachers explore strategies and techniques needed to effectively implement the five student programs. An overview of the content and lessons for each student program is presented. Students explore and learn about their own family history. They discover that history is more than memorizing a list of facts, dates, and names. Students learn that history is a way of recording, preserving, and connecting to the past. Topics include: Ancestry Detectives, Back to the Past, Family Scrapbooks, Family Stories, and Family Histories.

 

Geography: California, Here I Come!
One 60-minute staff development program
Five 30-minute student programs for grades 4-6

During the staff development program, strategies and techniques needed to effectively implement the five student programs are explored. Content and activities for each student program are demonstrated and the teacher guide is presented.

Students explore how people have interacted with environmental regions such as mountain ranges, major coastal bays, natural harbors, river valleys and delta regions, and how these interactions have influenced history. Events from California history are used as examples. Through an activity based learning environment, students acquire basic study skills and utilize critical thinking as history and geography come alive.

During the staff development program, strategies and techniques needed to effectively implement the four student programs are presented. Student programs explore natural events and discover what impact these events have in determining how and where people live. Both historical and present day examples illustrate how people have adapted and survived. The topics include: Earthquakes: Historical Significance, Floods: Necessity and Deluge, Fires: Helpful and Destructive and Winds: Ordinary and Extraordinary.
