Teaching
Number Concepts (K-8)
One 60-minute
staff development program
This staff development program helps teachers identify important properties
of number that help build a firm foundation for understanding geometry
and algebra. Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities
for students, teachers, and parents are explored. Strategies and resources
are presented to help students learn how to use technology as a tool
for processing information, visualizing and solving problems, exploring
and testing conjectures, accessing data, and verifying solutions.

Programs:
Number Concepts
for Middle School (Grades 6-8)
Six
30-minute student programs
This module introduces students in grades 6-8 to several ways of representing
numbers and relationships among numbers. Lessons build and expand on
heir informal experiences with numbers. Students develop the ability
to make comparisons of quantitative information. Topics include: Powers &Exponents,
Factors & Multiples, Generalizations, Rational Numbers, Proportional
Reasoning, Problem Solving Involving Proportions.
Staff
Development:
Teaching Algebraic Concepts (K-8)
Two 60-minute staff development
programs
The two staff development programs help teachers understand what algebraic
thinking is and the importance of teaching algebraic concepts throughout
the grades. Emphasis is placed on how these concepts relate to learning
basic skills. Strategies for helping students develop algebraic thinking
are modeled. Program design, teacher guides, and online opportunities
for students, teachers, and parents are explored. Teachers discover
that they can teach algebra to their students.

Programs:
Algebraic Concepts for Middle School (Grades 6-8)
Six 30-minute student programs
Algebraic Concepts for Middle School is designed to help students make
the transition from arithmetic to algebra. Students are involved in
rich experiences that introduce them to equations, variables, integers
and other algebraic concepts. Students begin to see the relevance of
algebra in their world. The topics include: Patterns and Functions,
Expressions and Algebraic Symbols, Introduction to Integers, Working
with Variables, Operations with Integers and Equations.
